A 130 years old Sponge

 

 

A non commercial sponge

Hippospongia Communis or Kapadiko:

Sponge almost spherical. It's lower part and the bottom of the sponge is medium to hard fibers. It's having a dark brown color and usually is been fishing from 9 to 80 meters deep. Fishing areas are Crete, Didecanes, Cyclades, and Evia. In this kind also there is another sponge with the local name of Drositis which usually lives in a sea caves. It's characteristics is its light brown color and it is one of the best sponges.

 

 

 

Spongia Officinallis or Adiatica. Common name in Greece FINO.

A sponge with a unique character. Asymmetrical shape and color that seems like rast, and a feeling that seems like velvet. A classical Greek sponge, which thanks to it's construction is ideal for babies and soft skins. Fishing areas, Crete, Dodecanese, Samos, and Evia, and in depths up to 120 metters. A sponge that can last for  up to 40 years with a right treatment.

 

 

Spongia Agaricina or Officinallis Lamella. Common name Elephant ear.

It shape changes according to it's age. During it's elderly phase of it's life it completely changes to the shape of an elephant ear (hense the name). The older it gets the more elastic is becomming.  It has a gray to blue color and it can reach a diameter of 1.5 meters. Usually lays in a reef beds in depths from 60 to 100 metters.

           

Spongia Zimoca commonly known as Matapas.

This sponge is the most common among all the sponges you can see at any shop around the world. It starts with a deep black color from the outer part, and brown the inner part. Some of them they have the rasty color look. It lays on rocks and reef beds. Fishing areas is Crete, Dodecanese, Cyclades, Skiathos and you can meet it from 2 to 100 metters.

 

 

A 1912 Diving Suit.

Within 40 years of using this diving suit, Kalymnos lost 10.000 divers and 20.000 divers suffers from the diver's sickness "Bends", but only 8 divers lost their lives using the traditional way of diving at the same period.
